Experimental Departures from Self-Interest When Competing Partnerships Share Output∗

چکیده
When every individual’s effort imposes negative externalities, selfinterested behavior leads to socially excessive effort. To curb these excesses when effort cannot be monitored, competing output-sharing partnerships can form. With the right-sized groups, aggregate effort falls to the socially optimal level. We investigate this theory experimentally and find that while it makes correct qualitative predictions, there are systematic quantitative deviations, always in the direction of the socially optimal investment. Using data on subjects’ conjectures of each other’s behavior we investigate altruism, conformity and extremeness aversion as possible explanations. We show that deviations are consistent with both altruism and conformity (but not extremeness aversion).

An experimental comparison of incentive contracts in partnerships
Empirical work comparing individualized sharing and equal sharing schemes in partnerships has produced mixed results. Some studies find individualized sharing schemes superior, others find no difference, and still others find equal sharing schemes superior. This paper outlines a theory which reconciles these competing findings, and tests it with an experiment. We find that in conditions of high...
متن کاملWhen the Social Structure Overshadows Competitive Incentives:
Embeddedness of interfirm relationships in the social structure resulting from prior partnerships engenders order in new tie formation. However, competitive incentives make firms likely to undermine the order that they achieve through the formation of interfirm relationships. We focus empirically on unplanned dissolution of joint ventures between firms competing in the same industry and examine...
متن کاملSocial Preferences under Risk - An Experimental Analysis
The literature on social preferences provides overwhelming evidence of departures from pure self-interest of individuals. Experiments show that people care about others’ well-being and their relative standing. This paper investigates whether this type of behavior persists when risk comes into play. I devise an experiment which sheds light on the interrelation of risk and social preferences by m...
متن کاملEarly Fair Drop : A New Bu er Management
In this paper, we investigate the eeectiveness of packet-drop mechanisms in conjunction with fair queuing link scheduling and hierarchical link sharing. Under fair queuing, the link share of a ow changes dynamically due to the arrivals and departures of ows and their bursts. This phenomenon becomes more pronounced in the case of hierarchical link sharing. Packet-drop mechanisms play an integral...
متن کاملMonitoring the censored lognormal reliability data in a three-stage process using AFT model
Improving the product reliability is the main concern in both manufacturing and service processes which is obtained by monitoring the reliability-related quality characteristics. Nowadays, products or services are the result of processes with dependent stages referred to as multistage processes. In these processes, the quality characteristic in each stage is affected by the quality characterist...
